Where (the hell) is Matt?

Many of you are familiar with the story of Matt, the dancing traveler, and his videos on Youtube.   Here is a series of Embedded Readings adapted from a Spanish-language blog.   I’ll be using these in my Level 3 and 4 classes.   At the end of each level, we will watch one of the Where (in the hell) is Matt videos!!   (I’ll try to get the English version uploaded tonight, and if there is time, a version for Level 1 and 2 students as well)

Version 1:

Es un video que nos da envidia.

Nos cambiaríamos por Matt. 

Matt nació en Connecticut. 

Es programador.  

Decidió conocer el mundo.

Durante su travesía ha estado danzando.

The Unforgettable Hurricane…the French version

L’ouragan inoubliable
Il y avait un homme. Il s’appelait Peter. Il vivait à New Jersey. Il jouait au
volleyball à la plage. Il faisait du surf aussi. Mais, en 2012, il y avait un
ouragan. Il s’appelait Sandy. Les gens devaient partir. Peter avait peur.
L’ouragan Sandy est arrivé à New Jersey le 30 octobre, 2012. Il était
inoubliable ! Heureusement, Peter est sorti de sa maison. Le 31 octobre, Peter
cherchait sa maison, mais il ne l’a pas trouvée. Peter était très triste. Il
n’avait pas de maison, et il n’avait pas ses affaires. Il n’avait pas d’espoir.
Mais… l’aide est arrivé ! Peter a aidé aussi. Maintenant Peter a foi. Peter sait
qu’il y a toujours l’espoir. TOUJOURS !

L’ouragan inoubliable

bientôt. Peter avait peur de l’ouragan. Il avait peur des vagues énormes et des
vents forts. Il avait peur de perdre l’électricité.
L’ouragan Sandy est arrivé dans la ville de Sea Bright, New Jersey le 30
octobre, 2012. Il était inoubliable ! Heureusement, Peter est sorti de sa
maison. Le 31 octobre, Peter cherchait sa maison, mais il ne l’a pas trouvée. Il
cherchait les photos de sa famille, mais il ne les a pas trouvées. Peter était
très triste. Il n’avait pas de maison, et il n’avait pas ses affaires. Il
n’avait pas d’espoir.
Mais… bientôt beaucoup d’aide est arrivé ! Peter a aidé les autres gens aussi.
Maintenant Peter a foi. Peter a foi en autres gens. Peter sait que les gens
travailleront. Peter sait qu’il y a toujours l’espoir. TOUJOURS !

sortir de la ville pour éviter le danger. Peter avait très peur. Il a dû
échapper à l’ouragan et il a dû sortir de sa maison parce que l’ouragan venait…
et il venait bientôt. Peter avait peur de l’ouragan. Il avait peur parce qu’il
avait peur des vagues énormes et des vents forts. Il avait peur d’une
inondation. Il avait peur aussi de perdre l’électricité.

affaires, et il n’avait ni l’électricité ni l’essence. Il n’avait pas de
pouvoir. Il n’avait pas d’espoir.
Mais… bientôt la Garde nationale est arrivé. Plusieurs bénévoles sont arrivés.
Beaucoup d’aide est arrivé ! Peter aussi a commencé à aider les autres gens.
Maintenant Peter a foi. Il a foi en autres gens, en son gouvernement, en sa
famille et en ses amis. Peter a foi en soi-même ! Peter sait que beaucoup de
gens travailleront ensemble. Peter sait qu’il y a toujours l’espoir. TOUJOURS !

The Unforgettable Hurricane

 

There was a man.  His name was Peter.  He was living in New Jersey.  He used to play volleyball on the beach.  He also used to surf.  But, in 2012, there was a hurricane.  It was named Sandy.  People had to leave.  Peter was afraid.

 

Hurricane Sandy arrived in New Jersey on October 30, 2012.  It was UNFORGETTABLE! Luckily, Peter left his house…

 

On October 31st, Peter was looking for his house, but he didn’t find it.  Peter was very sad.  He didn’t have a house, he didn’t have his favorite things.  He didn’t have hope.

 

But…help arrived!  Peter also helped.

 

Now Peter has faith.  Peter knows that…there is always hope!

ALWAYS!

But, in 2012, there was a hurricane.  It was named Sandy.  People had to leave their homes.  Peter was afraid.  He had to leave his home …because it was coming soon.

 

Peter was afraid of the hurricane.  He was afraid of the large waves and the violent winds.  He was afraid of losing electricity.

 

Hurricane Sandy arrived in the town of Sea Bright, New Jersey on October 30, 2012.  It was UNFORGETTABLE! Luckily, Peter left his house…

 

On October 31st, Peter was looking for his house, but he didn’t find it.  He was looking for his family photos, but he didn’t find them.  Peter was very sad.  He didn’t have a house, he didn’t have his favorite things.  He didn’t have hope.

 

But, very soon, a lot of help arrived!  Peter also helped others.

 

Now Peter has faith.  He has faith in other people.  Peter knows that people will work.  Peter knows that…there is always hope!

But, very soon, the National Guard arrived!  A lot of help arrived!  Peter also helped others.

 

Now Peter has faith.  He has faith in other people, in his family and in his friends.  .  Peter knows that people will work together.  Peter knows that…there is always hope!

But, in October of 2012, there was a strong hurricane.  It was a destructive hurricane named Sandy.  All of the people had to leave their homes.  They had to leave their town in order to be out of danger.  Peter was very afraid.  He had to escape the force of the hurricane and leave his home …because it was coming ….coming soon.

 

Peter was afraid of the hurricane.  He was afraid because he was afraid of the large waves. He was afraid of the enormous force of the water and the violent winds. He was afraid of a flood. He was also afraid of losing electricity.

 

Hurricane Sandy landed in the town of Sea Bright, New Jersey on October 30, 2012.  It was an UNFORGETTABLE hurricane! Luckily, Peter left his house because upon returning on October 31st…

 

Peter was looking for his house, but he didn’t find it.  He was looking for his computer, but he didn’t find it.  He was looking for his photos of family and friends, but he didn’t find them either.  Peter was very sad.  Now he had a very different life than before.  He didn’t have a house, he didn’t have his favorite things, he didn’t have electricity, nor gasoline.  He didn’t have power.  He didn’t have hope.

 

But, very soon, the National Guard arrived!  Many volunteers arrived.  A lot of help arrived!  Peter also began to help others.

 

Now Peter has faith.  He has faith in other people, in his government, in his family and in his friends.  He has faith in himself!  Peter knows that many people will work together.  Peter knows that…there is always hope!

Ana es una estudiante  de Marcus Whitman.   Ana está enamorada de Enrique Iglesias.     Ana decide escribir un poema para él.     Lo manda a Enrique por correo electrónico.  Ana espera que a Enrique le guste mucho el poema.

Como una sonrisa eres tú

Tú eres el fuego de mi hogar.

Ana va a hablar con su amiga Mariah.  Le explica la situación.  Explica que escribir la poesía es difícil para ella.  “Puedes ayudarme?” le pregunta Ana a su amiga.  Mariah y Ana añaden líneas nuevas al poema.  Lo mandan a Enrique por correo electrónico.

Ana y Mariah esperan y esperan una respuesta.   Esperan que a Enrique  le guste mucho el poema. Esperan una semana.  No reciben una respuesta.  Piensan  que el poema todavía es demasiado corto. Deciden escribir un poema  aún más largo.

Ellas van a hablar con su profesora.  Le explican la situación.  Explican que el poema necesita ser más largo.  “Puede  Ud. ayudarnos?” le preguntan ellas a su profesora.  La profesora toma el poema a sus clases y los estudiantes  añaden líneas nuevas al poema.  Lo mandan  el poema  mejorado a Enrique por correo electrónico.

Como una promesa, eres tú, eres tú.
Como una mañana de verano.
Como una sonrisa, eres tú, eres tú.
Así, así, eres tú.

Todos los estudiantes  esperan y esperan una respuesta.   Esperan que a Justin le guste mucho el poema. Esperan un mes.  No reciben una respuesta.  Piensan  que el poema  no es impresionante.  Deciden que  Enrique está ocupado.    Deciden que quizás Enrique no es una persona simpática.

Ana decide  el poema necesita algo más personal.  Decide  poner arte al poema.     Dibuja y pinta con programas de la computadora al poema.   Lo manda el poema  mejorado a Enrique por correo electrónico.

Y espera otra vez………

Una mañana Ana se sienta en su clase de español.   Oye una llamada a la puerta y la profesora abre la puerta.    Enrique Iglesias entra en la clase con su guitarra.

“Está Ana aquí? “ pregunta Enrique a la profesora.

“Sí” responde la profesora.

Enrique  empieza a tocar la guitarra.   Ana no puede creerlo.    Enrique  empieza a cantar.  Toda la clase no puede creerlo.     Enrique canta…….

The Unforgettable Huricane

Había un hombre.  Se llamaba Pedro.  Vivía en Nuevo Jersey.  Jugaba al volibol en la playa. También practicaba el surf.  Pero, en 2012, había un huracán.  Se llamaba Sandy. La gente tenía que salir.  Pedro tenía miedo.

 

El Huracán Sandy llegó en Nuevo Jersey el 30 de octubre del año 2012. ¡Era INOLVIDABLE!  Por suerte, Pedro salió de su casa ….

 

El 31 de octubre, Pedro buscaba su casa, pero no lo encontró. Pedro estaba muy triste. L  No tenía casa, no tenía sus cosas favoritas.  No tenía esperanza.

 

Pero,. ¡Llegó ayuda! J  Pedro también ayudó.

 

Ahora Pedro tiene fe.  Pedro sabe que….¡Siempre hay la esperanza! J

¡Era un huracán INOLVIDABLE!  Por suerte, Pedro salió de su casa porque al regresar….

 

Pedro buscaba su casa, pero no lo encontró.  Buscaba sus fotos de su familia y sus amigos….pero no las encontró.  Pedro estaba muy triste. L  Ahora tenía una vida muy diferente.  No tenía casa, no tenía sus cosas favoritas, no tenía electricidad.  No tenía esperanza.

 

Pero, muy pronto llegó la Guardia Nacional.  ¡Llegó mucha ayuda! J  Pedro también ayudó a otros.

 

Ahora Pedro tiene fe.  Tiene fe en otras personas, en su familia y en sus amigos. Pedro sabe que gente trabajará  junta.  Pedro sabe que….¡Siempre hay la esperanza! J

Nadaba y jugaba al volibol en la playa con sus amigos todos los veranos. También practicaba el surf.  Era un surfista fantástico.  Las olas del océano eran perfectas.

 

Pero, en octubre del año 2012, había un huracán fuerte.  Era un huracán destructivo que se llamaba Sandy. Toda la gente tenía que salir de sus casas.  Tenía que salir de su pueblo para estar fuera de peligro. Pedro tenía mucho miedo. Tenía que escapar rápidamente de la fuerza del huracán…porque venía…venía pronto.

 

 

Pedro tenía miedo del huracán. Tenía miedo porque tenía miedo de las olas grandes, la fuerza enorme del agua y los vientos fuertes. Tenía miedo de una inundación. Tenía miedo de perder la electricidad.

 

 

El Huracán Sandy aterrizó en el pueblo de Sea Bright, Nuevo Jersey el 30 de octubre del año 2012.

¡Era un huracán INOLVIDABLE!  Por suerte, Pedro salió de su casa porque al regresar….

 

Pedro buscaba su casa, pero no lo encontró.  Buscaba su computadora…pero no la encontró.  Buscaba sus fotos de su familia y sus amigos….pero no las encontró tampoco.  Pedro estaba muy triste. L  Ahora tenía una vida muy diferente que antes.  No tenía casa, no tenía sus cosas favoritas, no tenía electricidad ni gasolina.  No tenía poder. No tenía esperanza.

 

Pero, muy pronto llegó la Guardia Nacional.  Llegaron muchos voluntarios.  ¡Llegó mucha ayuda! J  Pedro también empezó a ayudar a otros.

 

Ahora Pedro tiene fe.  Tiene fe en otras personas, en su gobierno, en su familia y en sus amigos.

¡Tiene fe en si mismo!

 

Pedro sabe que mucha gente trabajará  junta.

 

Pedro sabe que….¡Siempre hay la esperanza! J
